A Heart Fixed On the Faithfulness of God

By Apostle Joseph Hobbs, Th.D.
Ps 112:7

Ps 112:7

He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: His heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. (KJV)

"Sir Isaac Newton states that he did not consider that he had any advantage over other men, except that whatever he though of sufficient importance to begin he had sufficient resolution to continue, until he had accomplished his object."

Greetings to each of you in the name of Christ our Savior. Beloved, share this weekly column with you to hopefully, challenge, and inspire you to do with excellence all that God has placed in your heart or hand to do. I understand that the greatest challenge as it relates to fulfilling the purpose and plan that God has for each of our lives, is found in our ability to do two things. The first thing is to start. The next thing that must be done is to continue until we reach completion. The Psalmist shares with us a principle that I believe can assist in both stages of our development be it starting, or continuing. The key is found in fixing our hearts on the faithfulness of God to fulfill His will for our lives.

When the Psalmist speaks of his heart being fixed, what he is really saying is that his heart is steadfast in its belief that the purpose of God for his life will not be frustrated but will be fulfilled. While there are many reason that could be suggested for a person not completing the assignment that they have been given by God, one of the most common reasons is that there were given they entered a season of trouble. The passage above when read from the New International Version of the Bible says, "He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD." (Ps 112:7-NIV). Isn't it interesting that sometimes the reason we never live up to our abilities our reach toward our goals could be that we are operating in fear?

To overcome the paralyzing effects of fear we must learn to do as the Psalmist suggests in the text, make our hearts steadfastly trust in the faithfulness of God. I am encouraged by the writer of the Hebrews who says, "Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for He is faithful that promised)." (Heb 10:23-KJV). In order to receive from the Lord we must steadfastly affix our hearts on faithfulness, the trustworthiness of the one who has spoken the promise.
